The port of Piraeus is found 10 km to the south of Athens centre and is the largest port of Greece, as it serves ferries to most Greek islands. The port of Piraeus started to develop in the ancient times, when it hosted the big Athenian fleet. Although it somehow declined in the centuries after the 4th century B.C., it grew again in the 19th century, especially after Athens was made the capital of the Greek State in 1832. Today, Piraeus is the largest passenger port in Europe, mainly due to the high number of tourists that visit the Greek islands. Serving more than 20 million passengers every year, Piraeus is also the third largest port in the world. It can be easily reached by public means of transport from many neighborhoods of Athens
