The small yet beautiful island of Alonissos is known for its picturesque greenery and wonderful beaches. Although Alonissos is close to busy Skiathos and Skopelos, it remains a more peaceful and authentic destination.
The old capital of Alonissos is Chora, a charming village located atop a hill. Chora has been built on the site of a Medieval Castle that protected the island from external attacks. The paved paths of Chora are lined by traditional houses, cafeterias and some gift shops. After an earthquake that hit Alonissos in 1965, many houses in the village were damaged. The inhabitants abandoned it and moved a bit closer to the sea, where they built their new capital, Patitiri village.
The history of Alonissos island dates back to the prehistoric times, as shown by ancient settlements that have been found there. Alonissos is also mentioned in mythology as the myth says that the father of Achilles, the legendary hero of Troy, spend the last days of his life on that island.
The Minoan and the Mycenaeans built many towns there. The island developed its economical power due to trade, agriculture and wine making. In the Roman times, it was used as an exile land for political enemies and expelled citizens. All along its history, Alonissos was attacked by pirates. In the 13th century, it was conquered by the Venetians and then by the Turks. In 1829, after the end of the Greek Revolution, it was integrated to the Greek State.
Today the island owes a lot of its income in tourism. It mostly offers visitors traditional villages, beautiful beaches and a tranquil vibe. The beaches of Alonissos are usually not much organized in order to give visitors the best calmness. Most famous beaches are Chrissi Milia, Glyfa, Tzortzi Gialos and Lakes. Many tourism amenities are found close to these places and in other parts of the island.
Apart from the clean coasts, the sea water around the island is also of high quality. In fact, the sea area to the north of Alonissos has been declared a National Marine Park as it is rich in marine life. Moreover, the endangered species Monachus-Monachus, the rare Mediterranean Monk Seal, lives and reproduces there and on the islets to the north of Alonissos, which makes the area special.
Normal ferries:
The main port of Alonissos is Patitiri village, on the southern side of the island. You can go to Alonissos either from Agios Konstantinos or from Volos. Normal ferries need about 4 hours to go from Agios Konstantinos to Alonissos and 3 hours and a half from Volos. Alonissos is also connected by normal ferry to Skiathos (about 2 hours) and Skopelos (40 min).
Hydrofoils:
There are regular flying dolphins between Alonissos and Skiathos (45 min), Skopelos (30 min) and Agios Konstantinos (3 h).
