Ithaca, the legendary land of Ulysses… In the famous poet of Homer, it symbolizes the eternal destination all people are intending to find, the end of a journey and the beginning of a new one, the sweet homeland that we will always miss…
Ithaca today is a beautiful island in the middle of the Ionian Sea, very close to Kefalonia. It is known for its amazing beaches, the green landscape that dominates and the quiet vibe that the entire island emits.
The capital of Ithaca is Vathy, a picturesque village built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a lush green bay. The village had suffered some severe damages from a strong earthquake in 1953 but the inhabitants have taken good care of it and rebuilt their houses according to the traditional style. The waterfront of Vathy is lovely, lined by many taverns and cafeterias with beautiful view to the sea and people strolling around.
Other beautiful villages on Ithaca are Kioni and Stavros, on the northern part of the island. Kioni is a seaside village surrounded by amazing, crystal beaches and a lovely port with fishing boats. Stavros is built in high altitude and is mostly known for its cafeterias with wonderful views to the sea and the mountainside.
Among the best beaches on Ithaca, we can include Frikes, Dexa and Sarakiniko. They all have crystal water and are surrounded by lush green ambience, creating a picturesque and relaxing environment. Most of them are unorganized. To reach the beaches of Ithaca, you should better have your own means of transport or take the taxi boat that leaves Vathy and makes the tour of the island.
To go to Ithaca, there are normal ferries from the port of Patras and boats from the neighboring island of Kefalonia. There isn’t a ferry connecting Ithaca directly to Piraeus.
Normal ferries:
There is no direct ferry from Piraeus to Ithaca. Normal ferries to Ithaca depart from Patras, Peloponnese, the third largest port on Greece, and the trip takes about 4 hours. Ithaca is also linked to the port of Sami, on the neighbouring island of Kefalonia, in 40 minutes.
