Kalymnos Ferries: Online booking for Kalymnos Ferry Tickets

Kalymnos is a small island of the Dodecanese, right next to Leros and close to Rhodes. It is a quiet island, mostly famous for its clean beaches, the steep mountains that offer great climbing opportunities and its interesting caves.

The history of Kalymnos started in the ancient times. The temples and houses were built in the Doric style and the villages were democratically ruled, as Kalymnos was part of the Athenian Alliance. In the Middle times, Kalymnos was ruled by the Venetians who built strong castles, such as the Castle of Chryssocheria, to protect the island from the frequent attacks of pirates. After the Venetians, Kalymnos was ruled till 1912 by the Turks and till 1947 by the Italians, as all the Dodecanese. In 1947, it was integrated to the Greek State.

The capital and main port of Kalymnos is Pothia, on the southern side of the island. This is a lovely village with some impressive buildings and nice squares. There are also beautiful churches, such as the church of Agios Savvas with nice sea view. The most interesting thing to see in Pothia is the Sponge Factory in the square. As the Kalymnians have a long traditional of fishing natural sponges, this factory, one of the few to survive today, elaborates sponges and can show you pictures of divers some decades ago.

The most popular tourist resorts are found on the western side of the island, such as Myrties, Massouri, Kamari and Emporios. There you will find lovely family hotels and fish taverns by the sea. From Myrties, you can take the tour boat that goes to the neighboring islet of Telendos, a barren islet with some remote beaches.

Normal ferries:
Kalymnos is linked by normal ferry to Piraeus and the trip takes about 10 hours, depending on the vessel. Normal ferries also connect Kalymnos to other Aegean islands, such as Kos (1 hour), Rhodes (5 hours) and Samos (4 hours).
