It became known all over the world as it constitued the wonderful background of the Hollywood movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. Scenes from the film were filmed in Argostoli town, Antisamos beach and some mountainous villages of the island.
Kefalonia is the largest and the greenest island of the Ionian Sea. It is located between the Lefkada and Zakynthos and has a population of 45,000 permanent inhabitants, whose main resource is based on agricultural, fishing and tourism. The landscape of Kefalonia is very mountainous. In fact, its highest peak is Mount Athos, which has been declared as a National Natural Park.
Excavations have shown that the history of Kefalonia started in the ancient times. However, the island reached its cultural peak during the Venetian rule, which lasted from 15th till the 19th centuries. That period, many schools and theatres opened, while the noblemen of the island would go to Italy to study. Important public works were also built, like bridges, public buildings, lighthouses and roads.
Unfortunately, the earthquake that hit Kefalonia in 1953 destroyed many of these works and caused severe damages to others. However, the locals tried to restore most of them as well as their houses, which had also been damaged.
The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli, a lovely village with nice architecture. The trademark of Argostoli is the De Bosset Bridge, which was built in 1833 and works till today, connecting the town to the opposite peninsula. Argostoli is dotted by many Neoclassical and Venetian buildings, such as Korgialenios Library which hosts many rare manuscripts.
Other beautiful villages on Kefalonia are Fiscardo, on the northern side, and Lixouri, right opposite Argostoli. Both these villages have colorful houses and lovely ports with lots of fish taverns and relaxing waterfronts to stroll around. If you really want to know the island, explore the mountainous and seaside villages all over it. Things are kept quiet there and people are very warm.
Apart from traditional villages, Kefalonia also has wonderful beaches. In fact, they are considered among the cleanest beaches of the Mediterranean. The most photographed beach of Kefalonia is certainly Myrtos, a long beach with fine sand and crystal water. Myrtos is not organized and probably that is why it has kept its authenticity. It is surrounded by a large rock with lush greenery and you have to climb a path to get to Myrtos.
Other famous beaches on Kefalonia include Antisamos, Poros and Xi. Some of them are organized, while others are remain isolate to provide more peace to visitors. In any case, every beach on Kefalonia is special as it has something different to offer to tourists.
Normal ferries :
Kefalonia has two main ports, Sami and Poros. Ferries from Kilini, a town in western Peloponnese, about three hours drive from Athens, go to Poros, Kefalonia in about 1 hour and a half. The itineraries are frequent, usually four or five every day.
The port of Sami connects Kefalonia to Patras (2 and 1/2 h) and Igoumenitsa (4 h). There are also ferries from Sami to Ithaca (15 min for Pisaetos and 45 min for Vathi).
