Patmos Ferries: Online booking for Patmos Ferry Tickets

The small and tranquil island of Patmos is best known as the place where St. John wrote the Book of Revelation after his vision. The island is known for the beautiful St. John Monastery, overlooking Chora village, which adds to the aura of divinity that surrounds the island. According to the legend, Apostle John is believed to have lived in a cave on Patmos, in the mainland between Chora, the capital, and Skala, the port of the island.

The Monastery was established in the 11th century and was subsequently fortified to safeguard citizens from pirate raids. It was originally built on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to goddess Artemis. A chapel to Osios Christodoulos, the founder of the monastery, was built in the 17th century, apart from many other chapels. The monastery also houses the Ecclesiastical Museum, exhibiting many rare books, ecclesiastical items, holy gospels and valuable Byzantine icons.

Apart from historically significant monuments, Patmos also offers a peaceful environment for some relaxing moments. Quiet beaches and traditional villages dot the landscape of the island, which is rocky and pretty hilly. Beach resorts on Patmos are not much developed. The island just has the main amenities a visitor might need. The most popular beach resorts on Patmos are Skala and Grikos, where most hotels are found and the beaches are clean and sandy.

Chora, the capital of Patmos, is actually a picturesque village whose architecture and colors remind of a fortress. Arched, paved streets, corners with beautiful views and austere architecture form the characteristics of the village. Some taverns and cafeterias are to be found here and there. Nightlife on Patmos is not wild at all. As the island is known as a religious and calm destination, things are kept pretty quiet.
