The region right above the town of Volos is called Pelion and it is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Greece. This area combines lush green mountains and crystal, blue waters. There are also many traditional villages spread all around that give excellent views.
The region of Pelion is known not only for its beauty but also for its mythological background. According to the myth, this is where Jason, the legendary hero who traveled all the way to Colchis to get the Golden Fleece, grew up. Jason was raised and taught by Centaur Cheiron, a wise creature half-man half-horse. The Centaurs were frequently mentioned in the ancient myths and the Greeks believed that they were living in Pelion. That is why they named the area “the mountain of the Centaurs”.
A famous village of Pelion is Makrinitsa, at an altitude of 650m above sea level. Makrinitsa is known for its traditional mansions that were built by its wealth owners and the many springs with running water. The lovely square of Makrinitsa with the huge plane tree in the centre gives excellent views to the town of Volos and its big port.
Another beautiful village of Pelion is Tsagarada, on the southern side of the eastern side of the peninsula. Built among the mountains, it has many trees and stone houses. Milies, Vizitsa and Portaria are also nice mountainous villages to visit.
Apart from beautiful, mountainous villages, Pelion also has great beaches with crystal water. Among them, we can include Papa Nero and Agios Ioannis, both surrounded by lush greenery. Close to these beaches, there are also many beach bars that stay open all day and night long.
Pelion is also known for its local products. Jams and spoon sweets are produced in the villages following traditional recipes. You can find bars with these products in open markets and gist shops in almost all the villages of Pelion.
