Poros is a small island in the Saronic Gulf but gets very popular in summer as a weekend destination. Due to its closeness to Athens and its natural beauty, tourists prefer it to spend some peaceful vacations.
The picturesque town of Poros is the capital and the main port of the island. It is amphitheatrically built on the slopes of a green hill and extends till the sea. Paved, narrow streets cross the town, elegant houses can be seen on sides and lovely squares come around in the corners. The waterfront of Poros looks lovely with the small fishing boats moored in the marina and the cafeterias with view to the sea. The trademark of Poros is the Clock Tower that stands on the hill on top of the town. This clock tower was built in 1927 and looks imposing. This is the first thing to see as the hydrofoil reaches the island.
Beaches on Poros are usually crowded and well organized. The busiest is Askeli beach, a couple of km from the town. Many tourist amenities are found in Askeli, including luxurious hotels and lively beach bars. The sandy shore and the crystal water attracts lots of visitors. Another beautiful beach in the area is the Love Bay, 50 m on the opposite site of the island. This charming beach has a narrow shore but it is surrounded by a lush forest of tall pine trees. The romantic sense of this beach gave its name.
Apart from great beaches, Poros also has many sites to see. The Russian Dockyard, for example, may be partly ruined today but it has been declared as a historical monument today. It used to be a Russian base for operations till the mid-19th century and then it became the first Naval Base of Greece, after its liberation. Moreover, the Lemon Forest is a famous place to visit in Poros. It is found on the opposite shore of Peloponnese and it is a dense area of lemon and orange trees. Among the trees, you will find old watermills.
Hydrofoils:
Poros is linked by hydrofoil to Piraeus and the trip takes about 30 min. Itineraries are very frequent, especially in summer. Poros is also connected to some nearby towns and islands, such as Aegina island (1 and 1/2 h by ferry), Hydra island (30 min by hydrofoil), Spetses island (1 hour by hydrofoil), Hermioni town (1 h by hydrofoil), Methana town (30 min by ferry) and Porto Heli town (1 and 1/2 h by hydrofoil).
