Rethymno Ferries: Online booking for Rethymno Ferry Tickets

Rethymno town is one of the biggest towns in Crete and the capital of Rethymno prefecture. The area in general is one of the most popular summer destinations in Greece, due to its beautiful landscape and the long, sandy beaches.

The town of Rethymno is built on the northern coast of the island and is found between Chania and Heraklion. It has a rich historical background, from the prehistoric till modern times. The area reached its top in the Venetian Era, when it was turned into a shipping and trading centre. The Venetians reformed the architecture of the town and built many buildings that survive till today, such as the impressive Fortezza (Fortress) of Rethymno, the Venetian Loggia, the Porta Guora, Romindi Fountain and many Venetian buildings that stand along the Old Town.

In the 15th century, Rethymno passed through a series of devastations when the Algerian pirates attacked it. They conquered the city, robbed it and destroyed it. The Turks took over Rethymno in the year 1646. The city passed through marked downfall during the Ottoman rule. This was a bad period for the town and the locals fought strongly for their freedom. Finally, in 1913, Crete was integrated to the Greek State, after centuries of occupation.

Apart from a beautiful capital, Rethymno also has a gorgeous landscape. Along the northern and the southern coasts, you will find amazing beaches that extend for many kms. Some of the most beautiful and well-organized beaches on the northern coast are Adele, Panormos and Bali, while Plakias and Agia Galini on the southern coast are equally popular. Around these beaches, you can find all kind of tourism amenities.

Between the northern and the southern coasts, the mainland is wild and gorgeous. Traditional villages, like Anogia and Spili, keep their quiet Cretan vibe, while many Byzantine monasteries can be found all your way, such as the historical Monastery of Preveli, which played an important role in the liberation of Crete at first from the Turks and then from the Germans in the Second World War. Close to this monastery, there is Preveli Lake, a region of great beauty.

The whole area of Rethymno in general is much tourism developed and gets very popular in summer. However, there are also quiet places to enjoy the beauty of landscape and the welcoming character of the Cretan people.
