About Skyros

This is the least popular island of the Sporades complex. Located right opposite Evia island, Skyros is known for its isolate beaches and calm atmosphere. Even in high season, Skyros receives fewer tourists than the other three Sporades islands, so it is perfect if you are looking for somewhere peaceful.

Skyros Town is built amphitheatrically around a bay and is dominated by a Venetian Castle on top of the hill. This Castle was originally built by the Byzantines and then it was enforced by the Venetians, who conquered the island. Inside the walls of the castle, there is the church of Saint Georgios, with notable frescoes.

Beaches on Skyros are many but most of them are unorganized and pretty isolate. The only organized beach is Molos. Actually, Molos and Skyros Town are where most tourist amenities are found on the island. Nice beaches on Skyros are also Agios Fokas, Atsitsa and Pefkos.

Note also that Skyros is also famous for its unique ponies, a special horse breed that can be found only there. These ponies grow up on Skyros since the ancient times and it is said that even Alexander the Great was using them in his expeditions because they were very strong. They are shorter than the normal horses and small bodied. Such ponies can be seen today in various farms on the island and at the Skyrian Pony Centre.
