General Information about Tinos Island
The island of Tinos has a great religious importance for the Greeks, due to its impressive church of the Annunciation of the Virgin that is found in the capital. This church is considered as the patron church of all Greece and the icon of the Virgin in it is believed to be miracle working.
Thousands of pilgrims are coming every year on Tinos to knee this Holy Icon and pray. Every year, on August 15th, there is a grand festival to honor this church, the greatest religious festival in Greece. A Holy Mass is carried with much glory and the miraculous icon is toured around the town and to the harbor, over the heads of the pilgrims. To show their faith, many people walk on their knees from the port to the church.
Apart from an island with a religious character, Tinos is also a popular summer destination. The most busy beach resort on Tinos is Agios Ioannis Porto, with crystal beaches and luxurious hotels close by. Other popular beaches are Agios Sostis and Agios Markos, with long and sandy coasts. In any case, the busiest beaches on Tinos are located on the southern side, close to the capital village. The beaches on the northern side are pretty quiet and remote, even in summer.
Villages on Tinos are mostly mountainous and have a few inhabitants. They are known for their rocky surroundings, beautiful churches with tall bell towers and the dovecotes that dot the landscape. These dovecots are characteristic of the island and are found all over it.
Tinos is mostly an island of nice beaches and quiet landscape. As there aren’t many sites to see, a place worth to visit on Tinos is the Museum of Yannoulis Chalepas in Pirgos village. Tinos has a long tradition in sculpture and Yannoulis Chapelas is thought as the greatest sculptor of modern Greece. His old house has now turned into a museum with pieces of his work and sculpture tools.
In overall, the island doesn’t have the vivid and wild vibe of other Cyclades islands. It is a beautiful destination with traditional character that attracts visitors looking for authenticity and calmness.
