About Samos

Samos is one of the greenest islands in the Aegean Sea. It has vast areas of greenery, wonderful beaches with clean water and picturesque villages all over its territory.

The capital of Samos is Vathi, located on the eastern part of the island. It is known for its lovely waterfront and the elegant mansions in the central square. Other beautiful villages are Karlovasi, which along with Vathi are the main ports of Samos, and Pythagorio. All three villages offer a lot of tourist amenities, some interesting sights to see and amazing beaches close by.

The most famous tourist resort on Samos is Kokkari, a very long and pebbled beach lined by taverns and hotels. Other beautiful beaches are Psili Ammos, Tsamadou, Lemonakia and Mykali. Many beaches in Samos are organized and a lot of watersports clubs are located there. However, there are also some secluded coves to enjoy tranquility and privacy.

The mainland of Samos is mountainous and lush green. Forests of pine and plane trees dot the landscape and they are crossed by nice trekking routes. Some caves can be found here and there, such as the cave of Pythagoras, the famous ancient mathematician, near Marathokampos. Pythagoras was living and hiding in this cave when the tyrant of Samos was caching him.

Other sites to see on Samos are the Tunnel of Eupalinus, which was actually an aqueduct in the ancient times, the Castle of Logothetis in Pythagorio and the Heraion that are the remains of the ancient temple of Hera.
