The ferry company Golden Star Ferries has its base in the port of Rafina, the second busiest port of Attica, situated the closest to the airport of Athens, Eleftherios Venizelos.

The company was founded in 2011 and its fleet currently consists of 2 vessels (a conventional ferry and a high-speed one). The conventional ferry Superferry is fully renovated and has been available since 2016. It connects Rafina to Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Ios and Santorini. Its speed can reach up to 21 knots and it can carry 1.760 passengers, as well as 280 vehicles.

The high-speed Superexpress is one of the largest luxurious catamarans in Greece. It connects the port of Rafina to Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Ios, Santorini, Milos, Folegandros and Paros. Its speed reaches up to 35 knots. It has a capacity of 1.070 people and 200 cars.

Ferry crossings are scheduled on a daily basis.

The vessels of Golden Star Ferries have a modern design and various seat types are provided in their lounges. They also have garages, facilities suitable for passengers with disabilities, cabins for pets, shops, play areas for children and cafeterias. Satellite TVs and WiFi are available as well.

For your tickets, Golden Star Ferries supports electronic tickets and offers discounts to certain categories of passengers.

For the quality of its services, the company received the "Passenger Line of the Year" award from Lloyd’s International Organization in 2017.

Cancellation policy

• 14 days before the departure, the tickets are fully refunded or turned to open-date tickets or they are changed to another day.
• From 14 days to 7 days before departure: the tickets are 75% refunded or alternatively they are turned to open date tickets.
• From 6 days up to 12 hours before departure: 50% refund or change to open date ticket.
• From 12 hours before departure to upon departure time: the tickets can not be cancelled or turned to open date tickets.
* After the ferry departure, the tickets can not be cancelled or turned to open date tickets.

Open date tickets:
Tickets can be converted to open dated up until 12 hours before the departure. Open date tickets are valid for one year from the original issuing date. Open date tickets are not valid for embarkation unless replaced by new tickets with the date of departure.
If the fare of the new ticket is higher, passengers have to pay the difference. If the fare of the new ticket is lower, the difference in price is not refundable.
Open date tickets and replaced tickets cannot be cancelled.

Passengers Tickets Conditions

Approved by the Hellenic Ministry of Mercantile Marine
• The ticket is issued in the passengers name, is personal and non-transferable. It is valid only for the class and the trip for which it was issued.
• The fare does not include catering.
• Passengers should be at the embarkation area of the ship one (1) hour before departure. If the passenger is not in time for sailing, he/she is not entitled to a refund of the fare.
• Children up to 4 years old travel free of charge and are not entitled to bed, while children over 4 and up to 10 years old pay a reduced fare and are entitled to bed.
• The bearer of a full ticket is allowed to carry free of charge luggage up to 40 kilos or 1 cubic meter.
• In case of loss of the ticket, it will not be replaced nor the fare will be refunded. The shipping company is not responsible for any damage or loss of the passengers luggage that is under the personal care of him/her during the trip.
• Jewellery, money and valuable objects may be delivered to the ships accounting office for safekeeping.
• The shipping company will not be responsible for any delay in sailing, deviation and not keeping normal route, due to bad weather conditions or orders of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine or the Harbor Authorities or due to force major.
• It is forbidden to the passengers to carry explosives, inflammable, incendiary and dangerous in general materials.
• The passengers are responsible for the observance of the Harbor, Sanitary and Custom regulations. The passengers should comply with the captains and the crew orders regarding the maintenance of order and the safety of the ship.
• The passenger should address any complaint during the trip to the ships captain or first mate and after the arrival, to the shipping company or to the Harbor Authorities.
• If for any reason the travel is cancelled due to the ships responsibility, the fare is refunded without any further obligation of the shipping company towards the passenger.
• The shipping company has the right, after approval of the Ministry of Mercantile Marine, to replace the vessel for which the ticket was issued with another vessel.

Vehicle Transport Receipt Conditions

Approved by the Hellenic Ministry of Mercantile Marine
The drivers are obligated to load and unload their vehicle.
• The vehicles should be at the waiting for shipment area one (1) hour before departure and in any case on the time prescribed by the Port Regulation in force.
• The driver is not entitled to refund of the fare if he is not in time for sailing, while if he states before sailing his intention not to ship his vehicle, he is entitled to a refund of half of the fare.
• In case of loss of vehicle transport receipt, the fare is not refunded.
• The vehicles passengers have to get out of them before their shipment aboard.
• The passengers should carry with them objects that they need during the travel. After sailing the entrance to the vehicle station is forbidden.
• The transportation of explosives, incendiary and dangerous in general materials is forbidden. The priority order is determined by the Port Regulations of each Harbor Authorities, where the vehicles are shipped.
• Unaccompanied alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) are not permitted to be transported - boarded. Furthermore, AFVs that have damage in their power supply, their tanks, or accumulators, in case these have not been removed, will not be allowed to board the vessels. The respective driver-owner of the AFVs shall be solely responsible for ensuring that the vehicle in question is not damaged or defective in its fuel supply system or batteries. Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs) are considered hybrid & electric vehicles and vehicles using liquefied and compressed gaseous fuels.

Really bad

First time I've written such a bad review for a trip to Greece. Always been satisfied with booked ferry crossings except this time. Paros - Santorini by Goldenstar Ferries Superexpress. Normally 1h30 journey and 97 euros for 2 persons. It was 3 hours late, no information before, 2 hours waiting in the sun, no excuses, nothing.....finally the journey took 4h30. We should have taken a slower, cheaper ferry. Goldenstar is a company to be avoided.

The fact that this is rated a 4.7 is a joke. No communication on their end either. I wouldn't take the ferries again or visit any islands due to the BS
Terrible service. Always late. Ferries would go from a 3hr trip to 6hr. No structure. Chaotic getting on and off the boat. But there were 8 people yelling at you to move forward when there is a car in front of you, but no structure before or after that. Nasty bathrooms. Zero services on board. Have to pay for wifi. They changed plans a lot but no notifications.

Smooth Sailing

Traveled as a couple (pedestrians) from Rafina to Gavrio (Andros) at the beginning of December. Booking was made online from France, and there were no bad surprises when we were on-site. The boarding process (including scanning our COVID passes) was quick and efficient. The ship was modern, clean and comfortable. The staff was not overly friendly, but fine. Same thing on the way back to Rafina. The only little "snag" is we thought we had to fill in a form about COVID symptoms, and it turned out that we didn't have to, this formality had been cancelled (not that it mattered much, on the contrary...). I guess some people may experience something different in the summer season with boats being packed with tourists, the scorching heat and the cancellations due to the μελτέμι wind. However, based on my own experience, I would recommend Golden Star Ferries.

I absolutely do not recommend booking tickets here. The tickets were supposed to be electronic, but that's a lie. I have not received any tickets. The ferry from Mykonos to Naxos was delayed, no information, no explanation or even a word of apology. Office staff very rude. I travel a lot, but this is the first time I experienced such arrogance. My ferry from Naxos to Mykonos was scheduled for 9:15 am the office changed the ferry to 1:45 pm i missed my flight !!!

Please note that when you book e-tickets this does not mean that somebody sends you the tickets / boarding cards via email automatically. It means that you can do the web check in yourself before your trip and receive your boarding card in electronic format in order not to have to go to the port kiosk to pick it up.

We are sorry to hear about the delays you faced during your trips. We contacted Golden Star ferries who informed us that indeed they changed your departure time to be at 13:45 (due to their general rescheduling). As per the information we received from Golden star ferries they sent you an informing email to your mobile 5 days before your trip date to inform you and you went to their local central agency on Naxos and cancelled your booking one day before your trip date.
