Facts

Learn what you don't know about Agistri!

  • In ancient times, the island was known as Kekrifalia (“embellished head”), a name associated with a fascinating myth. As the story goes, the goddess Aphaia sought refuge in Agistri and Artemis decided to help her by giving her a crown of flowers, so that she wouldn’t be recognized.
  • The area of Skliri hides one of the most Instagrammable spots in Agistri: the quaint Odos ton Erotevmenon (Lovers’ Street), where couples often pose for memorable pictures.
  • The village of Myli owes its name to the many traditional windmills that used to operate there until the 1960s. Only one of them is still extant.
  • Aponissos Lake is a significant saltwater wetland rich in flora and fauna. The adjacent chapel of Agios Nikolaos is surrounded by legends, according to which two pirates were once buried there.
  • Agistri stands out for its production of delectable olives and exquisite pine honey, as well as for its flavorful wine.

Island-hopping: Where to go next?

From Agistri, it is possible to hop over to the neighboring Aegina, which lies just 10-20 minutes away by ferry. However, as Agistri is not connected to any other destinations, it is through Aegina that travelers can reach the rest of the Saronic Islands.
