About Karpathos

If you want to describe Karpathos in one phrase, you could say it is a "calm power". Although it is quiet unknown to foreigners and the Greeks believe it is a pretty remote island, in fact this island combines everything: calm beaches and water sports, traditional villages, archaeological sites and modern structures, excursions to remote islets and hidden caves all over the island.

Karpathos belongs to the Dodecanese complex and it is situated close to Crete. The capital and main port is Pigadia, built around a bay on the southern part of the island. The landscape around Pigadia is rocky and barren, while you can find some interesting caves, like the cave of Poseidon. Close to Pigadia, you can also see the archaeological site of ancient Potideon. The most beautiful village of Karpathos is Olympos, built on the slopes of a hill and with intense traditional character.

Apart from villages, Karpathos also has amazing beaches. The most famous are Kyra Panagia and Apela, due to the picturesque and lush green ambience. This beach is actually a small, relaxing bay with crystal water. Other beautiful beaches are Achata, Megali Amopi and Arkassa. The most tourist developed spots on Karpathos are Lefkos and Finiki, on the western side of the island, which also have organized beaches.

In Karpathos, you can also practice windsurfing on the beach of Makrigialos. The winds are blowing strong there, especially in the afternoon.
