INFORMATION ABOUT KEFLONIA

Kefalonia became known all over the world when it constitued the wonderful setting for the Hollywood movie “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. Scenes from the film were filmed in Sami, Argostoli and Antisamos.

Kefalonia is the largest and greenest island of the Ionian Sea. It is located between Lefkada and Zakynthos, with frequent connections by ferry to Kefalonia. The island has a population of 45,000 permanent inhabitants, whose main resource comes from agriculture, fishing and tourism. The landscape of Kefalonia is very mountainous. In fact, its highest peak is Mount Ainos, which has been declared a National Natural Park.

Excavations have shown that the history of Kefalonia started in the ancient times. However, the island reached its cultural peak during the Venetian rule, which lasted from the 15th till the 19th century. That period, many schools and theatres opened, while the local noblemen would go to Italy to study. Important public works were also built, like bridges, public buildings, lighthouses and roads. Unfortunately, the earthquake that hit Kefalonia in 1953 destroyed many of these works and caused severe damages.

The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli, a place with nice architecture. The trademark of Argostoli is the De Bosset Bridge, which was built in 1833 and connects the town to the opposite peninsula. Other beautiful villages on Kefalonia are Fiscardo, on the northern side, and Lixouri, right opposite Argostoli. Both these villages have colorful houses and lovely ports with lots of fish taverns and relaxing waterfronts to stroll around.

Apart from traditional villages, Kefalonia also has wonderful beaches. In fact, they are considered among the best beaches in the Mediterranean. The most photographed beach of Kefalonia is certainly Myrtos, a large bay with exotic blue water. Other beautiful beaches on Kefalonia are Antisamos, Skala and Xi.
